As the [only] leading product designer on the team, I had to change my hats multiple times a day.

From marketing content to presentation decks to email marketing, I truly did it all. Working with the marketing team, I helped create visuals for LinkedIn posts/campaigns, G2 and ProductHunt posts, and create written content to tell the story of Scispot to fresh eyes. And then working with the engineering team, I was pushing out Figma prototypes daily for new features that customers wanted for their use cases. For any presentations that Scispot was a part of, like the end of their venture at the Creative Destructive Labs accelerator program, I worked closely with the CEO and co-founders (the Singh brothers) to implement their vision to a T.

A guide to the brand

A guide to the brand

My work was first highly focused on creating a company branding guideline and updating the site pages (including it's information architecture). I created a starting design legacy that could be passed down between designers long after I'm gone. This was highly needed to retain consistency throughout various co-op students and their contributions to Scispot.

The landing page story telling had to be largely improved. Upon visiting the site for the first time, I could not exactly tell who Scispot was and what they really did without conducting my own Google queries. The home and about pages were rewired through Figma before being implemented into Webflow. SEO made the pages discoverable, but the new design decreased bounce rate by almost 70%.

I was tasked with redesigning the Scispot OS application interface. The founders expressed that their current look was outdated and their clients desired something more modern and distinctive compared to their competitors. I conducted contextual inquiries to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of competitors. I regularly met with Scispot founders and clients to comprehend and create wireframes for specific features, including customizing Scispot's API to fit the client's use cases from a UX design perspective.

I helped create an AI chatbot for our platform, SciBot. He’s a digital lab assistant there to help with frequent queries and any questions users have about certain processes when extracting, logging, and analyzing data.

I had to continously build a plane while flying, ease up on perfectionism, work with little feedback, and navigate pre-existing architecture.

At Scispot, the startup pace was a whirlwind—every day was about hitting the ground running with prototypes, then tweaking them on the fly to keep up with our growth and product goals. I quickly learned that perfection isn't the goal in the first draft; what matters in a startup is getting something solid out there and then making it better bit by bit.

In our startup environment, we often found ourselves juggling numerous tasks, leading to confusion as messages were buried in Slack channels. To address this, I collaborated with a marketing colleague to introduce a new standard operating procedure (SOP) focused on integrating feedback more effectively. This change significantly improved communication between the design department, where I worked, and the engineering team, clarifying both the tasks at hand and the methods to accomplish them. While user feedback was previously acknowledged at Scispot, it was rarely acted upon efficiently. The implementation of this new process became crucial for fostering a genuine user-centered approach in our design and strategy, ultimately enhancing our connection with the users and the impact of our work.

The best of junior mentorship and learning with your team.

The best of junior mentorship and learning with your team.

I was invited to help onboard two additional designers long after my co-op tenure. This opportunity allowed me to share my journey, the hurdles I overcame, and the shortcuts I discovered. It was more than just a walkthrough of our platform; it was about instilling confidence and fostering a sense of belonging. Through this process, I not only imparted knowledge but also honed my own skills, learning to see our projects through fresh eyes. This mentorship experience was a testament to the collaborative spirit at Scispot, highlighting how growth often comes from teaching others.

Expertise in design, not necessarily the subject matter, is key. Feeling swamped by biomedical jargon like "logging samples" and "manifests" initially made me think I needed deep domain knowledge. But I learned that's what my team could help me out with! By asking questions, drawing parallels to familiar processes, and seeking feedback through user testing with domain experts, I learned to navigate and design effectively within unfamiliar territories.
